Why losing weight gets harder after 40. And what works.
After 40, the same diet and exercise that used to work can quietly stall. It is not a lack of willpower. Your metabolism, hormones and muscle all change with age. Here is what is really going on, and the health-first way to turn it around.
If your weight has crept up after 40 even though you eat carefully and move when you can, you are not imagining it. The body at 45 does not respond the way it did at 25. The good news: once you understand why, the fix is straightforward, and it is about health, not punishment.
What changes after 40
Three quiet shifts stack up. Your metabolism slows as you naturally lose muscle, the most calorie-hungry tissue you have. Hormones change, in both men and women, which affects where fat is stored and how easily it comes off. And years of busy, sedentary work leave the body less active overall. None of this is your fault, but together it tilts the balance.
Why crash diets backfire
Cutting calories hard feels like it should work, and the scale may drop for a week or two. But aggressive dieting burns muscle along with fat, which lowers your metabolism further, so the weight returns and is harder to shift next time. After 40, protecting muscle matters more than chasing a fast number.
What actually works
- Build and keep muscle. Strength training two to three times a week is the most powerful way to lift a slowing metabolism.
- Eat enough protein. Protein protects muscle, keeps you full, and supports recovery as you age.
- Move through the day. Walking, standing and daily activity burn more than any single workout, without the stress of extreme dieting.
- Protect sleep and manage stress. Poor sleep and high stress raise the hormones that store belly fat. Recovery is part of the plan.
After 40, the goal is not to eat less and suffer more. It is to build a stronger, healthier body that burns more on its own.
Where coaching helps
The right amount of training, the right protein, and a plan you can keep around a full life looks different for everyone. A coach assesses your body, your numbers and your schedule, then builds something sustainable, with monthly InBody tracking so progress is measured, not guessed.
At The Coach Gym, this is coached one-on-one, health-first, with an assessment before anything else. If your old approach has stopped working, it is worth understanding why.
